Clearing the Clutter: How a Simple Reset Can Transform Your Energy

Back-to-School Energy, Even as Adults

As a little girl, the end of August meant back-to-school shopping. But before any new pencils or notebooks, my mom had a tradition: we would empty my closet completely. Then, only the clothes, books, or toys I truly loved would go back in.

It wasn’t just about being organized—it was about starting fresh.

Even now, decades later, I feel that same craving at the end of summer. Maybe it’s because routine has slipped away with vacations and kids being home. Maybe it’s the mental fog that comes from juggling too many things at once. But without fail, late August hits and I find myself longing for order and clarity.

Why Clutter Affects Your Mind and Body

When my home feels cluttered, my mind does too. And I’ve noticed I’m not alone—so many women I coach come to me saying things like:

  • “I’m tired but I can’t seem to rest.”

  • “I eat when I’m not even hungry.”

  • “I feel foggy, wired, and overwhelmed all at once.”

These are common signs of mental fatigue, and often they overlap with the ups and downs of perimenopause. Balancing hormones naturally during this stage of life isn’t just about supplements or diet—it’s also about creating calm in your environment.

When we clear physical clutter, we lower stress hormones, calm the nervous system, and create space for better routines. That’s why “getting organized” can actually feel like a boost of energy.

How Clearing Clutter Creates Energy

This year, I found myself reorganizing everything: my kitchen drawers, the coffee station, even my husband’s and my home offices. Once I shifted one space, the whole house seemed to follow.

What I noticed was powerful:

  • My email inbox got less cluttered.

  • I remembered to book the doctor’s appointments I had put off.

  • Prescription renewals finally got done.

  • I felt clearer, calmer, and more energized.

Clearing clutter wasn’t just about the kitchen or closet—it was about my calendar, my thoughts, and even my sense of possibility.

Clearing clutter isn’t just about closets or cupboards—it’s also about your time. If your calendar feels as overwhelming as your kitchen drawers, here are 3 ways to declutter it without the guilt.

The Link Between Clutter and Emotional Eating

One of the biggest areas I see this with clients is food. Emotional eating often shows up when life feels chaotic. You’re tired, you’re wired, and grabbing something quick feels easier than slowing down.

But here’s the truth: when you clear clutter—physical or mental—you create the space to pause. That pause is where change happens. It’s where you can ask yourself, “Am I really hungry? Or am I just exhausted?”

This is how to stop emotional eating: not by willpower, but by clearing space so you can hear yourself again.

Sometimes, the most powerful reset isn’t doing more—it’s giving yourself permission to do less. I wrote about my own journey with that here

Your September Reset

For me, September always feels like a reset. It’s a chance to reorganize not just my home, but also my mindset, my schedule, and my energy.

If you’ve been wondering “Why am I so tired all the time?” or if you’ve been saying yes when you want to say no, maybe this is your September moment too.

You don’t need a complete life overhaul. You just need to start with one drawer, one calendar entry, or one “should” you can let go of.

That’s how transformation begins—one small, intentional shift at a time.

Ready to Clear Your Clutter?

This is the work I do with women every day through transformational coaching. Together, we create space—inside and out—so you can move from “I should” into “I want to” and “I get to.”

If you’ve been craving a reset, you don’t have to do it alone.
Here’s where you can start: let’s connect and explore what clearing the clutter could look like for you.

If you’ve been wondering what it’s really like to have support in this process, I wrote a behind-the-scenes post about what working with a health coach feels like.
